Shelter Homes Program

Dignity Foundation works tirelessly to enhance the health, dignity and well-being of senior citizens. One such unique intervention is designed for poor elders living in shelters across Chennai. In collaboration with Greater Chennai Corporation and dedicated NGOs, we are bridging the gaps in healthcare, nutrition, and social support for the existing elderly residents of the shelter homes.

Key Interventions:

  • Nutrition Support: Recognising the inadequacy of food provisions, we are providing specialised diets to strengthen immunity and overall health of the seniors.
  • Geriatric Healthcare Services: Monthly doctor visits, complemented by quarterly health camps addressing critical areas such as eye and dental care, hypertension, diabetes, and dementia. Preventive screenings and consistent follow-ups ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.
  • Activity and Cognitive Stimulation: Dedicated activity coordinators organise counselling, cognitive exercises, skill training, yoga and meditation sessions to promote active ageing and mental well-being.
  • Social Entitlement and Legal Aid: Elderly residents are linked to essentials such as bank accounts, health insurance, pensions and other social benefits. Legal aid is facilitated through national helplines and relevant tribunals whenever needed.
  • Family Reintegration: To reduce homelessness among the elderly, family counselling fosters reconciliation. A six-month follow-up programme supports the reintegrated residents, ensuring their safety and stability within their families.
  • Referral Services: For those unable to reunite with their families, we partner with long-term institutional care providers, ensuring seamless referrals and ongoing follow-ups for the well-being of senior citizens.

Together, we are committed to creating a nurturing environment where senior citizens receive the care, support, and dignity they deserve — empowering them to lead healthier and more fulfilled lives.
