Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease and related memory disorders, is a growing crisis in India. Currently, the Dementia burden is close to 5 million. However, it is expected to become almost 3X – rising to 14 million by 2050!

One of the biggest challenges is the lack of awareness about Dementia. Many families don’t recognise the early signs, often mistaking them as a part of normal ageing. Mass awareness and early diagnosis can lead to better care, management and support.

The Role of Dementia Day Care Centres

Case Story: Santosh Anand Ji

Santosh Anand Ji, when diagnosed with dementia, went silent and stopped talking. She used to sleep all day and avoided interactions even with her family. In her youth, she was the captain of a hockey team and was fond of socializing. Playing cards was her favourite activity.

Her family members were helpless seeing her deteriorating condition until they visited Dignity Foundation’s Dementia Day Care Centre and enrolled her. The team conducted an MMSE test, spoke to her family members, and formed a timetable of activities for Santosh Ji. Within 20 days, her daughter Radhika noticed a notable change in her mother’s personality.

Now, Santosh Ji interacts with her family and has become active and talkative at the centre, sharing recipes and participating in various activities. Her positive transformation highlights the importance of compassionate care and tailored activities for seniors living with dementia.
